1. Dirty Air Filter

This is the most common cause of short cycling and should be the first thing you check. Air filters should be changed every 30 to 60 days; when they clog up, they impact air flow, which makes your system much less efficient. Eventually, the furnace can overheat, causing it to short cycle. Keep a supply of air filters on hand and ask your furnace repair contractor to show you how it’s done. You can then do this on your own throughout the season.

2. Poor Thermostat Placement

The thermostat should be placed somewhere that it can get an accurate reading reflecting the temperature throughout the home. If it’s placed too close to the unit or a vent, then it will register that heat as soon as the furnace kicks on and tell it to turn off much too soon. Move your thermostat to a different spot if this is the issue.

3. Improperly Sized Furnace

If you purchased a furnace that’s too powerful for the size of your home, then it will raise the temperatures much too fast, and the system will shut down before finishing its cycle.
